Bathroom Fitting

Beautifully finished but wrongly fitted wall-hung toilet

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

A builder is converting a long narrow room between the garage and house into a wetroom and small lobby. There is a single skin brick wall (non-loadbearing) between the garage and room. The toilet was supposed to "hang" off this wall. Probably due to a lack of communication between the boss, who knew exactly what toilet was to be fitted, and the guys doing the work, they insulated the wall and set up pipes etc for either a close coupled or back to wall wc, I don't know which. When I pointed out that there was a wall frame to go in/on the wall, they didn't look very happy. Instead of saying they'd made an error and giving me the choice of how to rectify it, they just did a "botch" job and fitted the wall frame in front of the wall, boxed it in and tiled it. There is now about 4 inches clearance between the toilet and the door. I don't like it, and asked why it was done like that. I got some mumbled reply, then 30 minutes later an excuse that the pipes wouldn't reach through the insulation if they put the frame in the garage. What can I do? They've already taken 8 weeks for a 3 week job and haven't finished yet. (To be fair, near the start, they found the flat roof was leaking so we lost a full week for that to be replaced. I accept that this messes up their booked work so I've made allowances for that.) I don't want to pay the final invoice which hasn't arrived yet. Should I insist that the tiles are removed and the toilet be positioned properly? I also think that I should not have to pay for all this either. The toilet cost £2k so it's very upsetting as I've spent a lot of my pension on this project. (I don't believe this company is a cowboy outfit - they have worked well otherwise, apart from not getting the wall taps, the handbasin and the cabinet above them in line!)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, my honest advice would be that if you are not happy with the work undertaken then, Two Options, Refuse to pay the invoice until the work has been rectified and you are happy or, Get a quote from another Handyman, plumber, bathroom fitter to rectify the work and deduct this from their invoice if they are not willing to sort it. We should all expect a good job done! Communication is key and it seems by this job it was something that was ultimately lacked. All the best.

Hello there. This is frustrating for you I am sure. Well you said you don't believe they are a cowboy outfit which is good to hear.If the boss clearly knew what toilet you wanted and how you wanted it then you have a valid point with the builder. Is there anything on his quote about the exact fitting of the toilet as this would help? This sort of thing does happen especially if you have different trades people on the job it rarely happens to one man or two men carrying out all the work but I appreciate builders get trades in. You sound like you do have a valid case it is just wether or not you are prepared to dig in and be okay with the confrontation. I am sure you know this but I can be 99% sure if you pay the final bill nothing will be done about it. In my years of doing this problems occur to all of us it is how you deal with them what sets the trades people apart. I wouldn't be happy if you were my customer and I had done that I probably would have bitten the bullet and put it in correctly, after all he knew what you wanted. Sorry to waffle on and I hope it goes well.
