Gaps in old Victorian floorboards-how to fill? Repair or replace entirely?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

We're about to buy an old Victorian house and want to get an idea of what to do with the floorboards. They look like they are partly original and I think some have been replaced - and replaced badly. There's gaps in between floorboards and holes in some corners of the room and they look to have replaced floorboards and left gaps for cables from plug sockets to go in. The floor in general is really squeaky as well. This is the same in a few rooms, not just in one. Would we need to rip up the entire of the old floorboards and replace with new ones? Or can we take up the offending floorboards and simply replace a few boards? Some rooms we may end up carpeting but the other we want to keep as wooden-we just want the floorboards to fit and not squeak! Any idea what the cost would be for an 11x11 foot room as an example inc labour and materials?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

yes you can just replace the worst of the floor boards and screw down all the rest to stop the squeak, BE CAREFUL the old boards will be nailed down so when you screw them make sure you put the screw next to the nail because you don't want to hit any cables or pipes that run underneath. Lift up a couple to look underneath if you can.
