Smell from British Gas 330+ Boiler

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

Odd one this, my wife noticed a faint gas like smell at the bottom right hand side of the boiler at the back by the wall. Faint as in she could only smell it when she was an inch or two away from the back of the boiler. First thought was a gas leak as the gas pipe goes into the boiler close to here so had National Grid out - no gas leak and no CO issue. British Gas then come out to “recommission” the boiler and reconnect the gas, test it all out - same result, all ok. Don't notice the smell for a bit and then it comes back. So go through the same national grid/BG routine, exactly the same nothing found and told all is safe. Smell stays away for 3 days and now is back again, sometimes faint other times more noticeable but you still have to be a couple of inches away from the boiler to smell it and sometimes no smell at all. The smell only appears once the boiler has finished running and has been turned off and then starts to appear after about 5 to 15 mins and then gradually goes after anything up to an hour. Any ideas/pointers gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Hi John, What i would do is first not trust british gas, if they have installed the appliance. ask a small firm local to you to do a survey on the boiler. just a quick ask, what you are smelling isn't heat is it? matt Director Em-gas & Heating solutions.

Hi, how old is the boiler? have a service and ask them to check the seals. If it's a newer boiler with a round chamber ask them to change the carbolt seal on the heat exchanger. if its a balance flue (older boiler) it could be residue gas unignited from the start up I agree not to trust bg but transco/grid you can they have nothing to gain Steve
