Chimney & Fireplace

Old fashioned fireplace taking up the living room. Please help

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

We're currently buying a house with a really unattractive gas fireplace. We are keen as soon as possible to knock the fireplace as it is out and replace it with a more modern fireplace (keeping it as a fireplace - if that makes sense :) The old fireplace is here http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33868113.html We'd like it to look something like http://www.thefireplacewarehouse.co.uk/fires/modern-contemporary-gas-fires/legend-spirit-contemporary-powerflue.html There is also one plug in the fireplace which is built into the stone. Could we just turn the electricity off and take a sledgehammer to it or would this be a terrible idea! What would you do? Thank you so much for your help :)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, I wouldn't recommend using a sledge hammer. Doing so would create a lot of work in making good after the bricks/stone have been removed. Using a lump hammer and bolster chisel would be the way to go. Remove the brickwork one course at a time from top to bottom. Less noise, mess and far less risk of injury or damage when swinging a sledge hammer about in your living room. As the plasterwork will need making good once the fireplace has been removed, it would be worth getting some quotes for a builder to make the changes you want.
