Repair or joist cut for old loft access and on the same joist cut section out for new loft ladder

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Ok, I have an old council built house which I'm desperately trying to get in shape for the arrival of twins. I'm going to be storing my office in the loft for the foreseeable future so have splashed out on a large loft ladder. I am confident in my diy skills to fit it, however the most suitable location is in line with the old loft access (built far too close to the eaves), so on the same joist which has a gap in it. Can I bolt a couple of new timbers to the old joist to make it strong enough structurally or is replacing the joist the only way to go?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The description isn't great but I can tell you bolting timbers is more than suitable but the overlap length needs to be as long as you can make it, certainly nothing under a meter each side. Also you'll need to use at least two sets of bolts minimum ether side of the opening. Look into joist hangers, any more questions just ask I hope this helps Chiltern Carpentry
