I have an old ballcock in the tank in our loft which seems very noisy. Is there a quieter more efficient option to the ballcock?

yes you can buy a slow fill type that will be quieter. ask at your local plumbing shop.

Yes the modern ballcock assemblies are quieter than the old ones. Replacement should be straight forward.
