Is it possible to remove pebbledashing and restore original brickwork?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.40 PM
I have a typical Edwardian terraced house which was pebbledashed sometime in the 70s. The neighbours houses are original brickwork whick is London stocks. I'm wondering if it is possible to have the pebbledashing removed and the brickwork cleaned. I don't know why it was pebbledashed but someone suggested it might have been cheaper than repointing so the pointing might also need doing.

You will not know the condition of the bricks until you have hacked of the pebble dash, if they are all sound and in good condition then point up.
It wouldnt have been cheaper to pebble dash the walls, and good brick work always look better.
There could have been a reason it was pebble dashed, and one reason could be that it was put on to stop or prevent any damp problem.

hi has the houses to both side of your property without render if not and they are sound no damage to the bricks your property should be the same, it is possble to remove the render and have the brickwork cleaned and restored but more than lightly it will need re pointing.after cleaning the brickwork as cleaning will take out some of the pionting.

Generally I would say no unless the render is loose. The process of hacking off will damage the face of the brick, which is the bit that holds the rain and the frost out.
The reasons people pebbledash could be repointing, aesthetics or sometimes the bricks have become porous.
