Could we retrofit a dry fix ventilated roof ridge on an old slate roof?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hello. Our office is in the roof space of a converted barn. Instead of ventilated roof tiles the builder put occasional ridge tiles overlapping their neighbours. This was OK for years but this winter we've had a problem with leaks. Could a roofer retrofit a dry fix ventilated roof ridge on the slate roof? And would this be advisable?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, this is possible. I would use a dry vented ridge system. this would allow ventilation and also make the ridge line maintenance free.

Continuous ridge venting will only work if there is venting at eve also breathable membrane will not vent the roof on it's own this also needs venting, a common misconception.

A dry ridge system would help the roof although its benefits would only be truly enhance if your roof already has a breather membrane felt. If the ridge are bedded correctly, they would certainly not cause a leak. A dry ridge system is for ventilation purposes, not to enhance a roofs waterproofing
