Laminate Flooring & Underlay

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.01 PM

I'm hoping to have an 8mm laminate flooring laid over a concrete floor soon, but I'm a bit lost with what underlay I should be looking at. What material type and thickness and if I need to do any additional prep on the concrete floor. Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would use a good quality underlay With foil back membrane wich would Help with cold Exp on bare concrete or better still ply the floor first then underlay the extra cost of ply you will save on keeping the heating on all day Got it .

Hello, Using a good quality underlay is definitely worth while, when installing floors and preparing I will always advice and use top quality underlay like Duralay Excel it is suitable for Laminate Flooring, with a Integral Silver Moisture Barrier and Good Acoustic Properties. The product is perfect for use on concrete and wood flooring. Be sure to tape the underlay joints with a suitable sealing tape, creating a moisture barrier and also strengthening the underlay joints. Use that product to compare to others, but it is one I will always recommend and use. With regards to prep, ensure that the floor surface is spotlessly clean, the last thing you want is something under the underlay popping your laminate up, so cleaning the floor first is must. Along with taking Skirting boards off and undercutting the architrave and door frames where necessary. If you're installing the floor yourself, or if not it still applies ensure that a 8-10 mm expansion gap is along the walls for expansion, this will be covered by the skirting when Refitted or Fitted. Hope this helps! Thanks, Dan D Carter Property Maintenance
