Damp Proofing

Have I got damp or is it lack of ventilation?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Hi I've recently bought my late fathers old stone under dwelling property. After removing all the furniture behind the sofa that was pushed up against the wall the wallpaper was all mouldy and coming away from the wall. The same applies to behind a large sideboard that was also tight up against a different wall. Also they is two large circle mould patches high up (2meter) on another earth retaining wall. All this is in a ground floor room that looks to have been recently (within 5years) skimmed in standard gypsum multifinish plaster. I'm wondering if the plaster should of been a "breathable" type perhaps"? Also double glazing windows were fitted throughout 5years ago but they is no mould issues upstairs, also no plastering has been recently done upstairs. I can't find any air bricks anywhere and they is no vents on these PVC windows. If Anyone can give me any info/advice I'd massively appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Nick

Hi Nick, Mould will typically only grow on moisture created internally, so it is likely to be as a result of a lack of ventilation. Although air bricks may allow some moisture to escape, passive ventilation is not enough to ventilate a home. Ask a ventilation specialist for a free survey, and they will be able to find the right solution for you, which would come with a money back guarantee that it will solve the problem. Kind Regards
