ceiling cracks around the edge of a flat roof
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.37 PM
I have an extension with a flat roof. The ceilings are boarded and skimmed and in good shape. However I get a crack, as good as, all round the edges of the ceilings. The reason for the cracks makes sense to me. The flat roof moves a bit, and causes the crack at this weak point. What is the best way to prevent this. Its not terrible but if I decide to get the rooms decorated Id rather include any tactics in the job............. otherwise the cracks will simply return in a few weeks.

Well to be honest i dont think there is a great deal you can do with it, if there is movement above.
It needs to really be racked out and mastic applied or filler applied.
This is normal practice, but if it keeps cracking, which it will always do over time, but after a few weeks as you said then maybe you can use a multi purpose 2 part filler.
This is a lot stronger than interior filler and would probably last a lot longer.
Its not the easiest stuff to sand down so dont leave it to thick on the crack its self.

This cracking may be a sign the the junction where the ceiling meets the wall hasn't been taped. When I say taped I mean plasterboard tape which is a paper tape with no adhesive on it. It's bedded in with jointing compound and filler to get a smooth finish for painting.
