topping up the water in a boiler

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.37 PM

Hi - some workmen turned off my boiler whilst working on the house and didnt turn it back on again before packing up (I was on holiday) and now the pressure is really low. I know I need to top it up but have no idea how to do this and the instruction manual is absolutely no help (as always). I know there will be a tap of some form - what will it look like, colour, how high should the pressure be

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

HI ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT YOU HAVE A COMBI BOILER THAT DELIVERS INSTANT HOT WATER WHEN YOU TURN THE TAP ON :- THERE ARE MANY POSSIBILITIES HOWEVER ONE IS AN EXTERNAL FILLING LOOP THAT IS SILVER /CHROME IN COLOUR AND THIS WOULD BE USED TO FILL THE SYSTEM UP BY OPENING THE VALVES UNTIL THE PRESSURE REACHED BETWEEN 1 TO 1.5 ON THE PRESSURE GAUGE AND THEN YOU TURN THE LEVERS OFF.. THE NEXT METHOD COULD BE AN INTERNAL FILLING LOOP OR INTERNAL LINK:-LOOK UNDER THE BOILER AND IF IT IS A VAILLANT BOILER WITH AN INTERNAL LINK THERE WILL BE TWO LEVERS THAT NEED TO BE TURNED TO THEIR OPEN POSITION ONCE THE REQUIRED PRESSURE HAS BEEN REACHED THEN JUST TURN THEM OFF . THE WORCESTER HAS AN INTERNAL LINK AND SOMETIMES HAVE A BIG WHITE KEY THAT NEEDS TO BE POSITIONED CORRECTLY TO ENABLE A SAFE REFIL.

my advice would be to go on youtube and there are plenty of videos showing you how to do this. A word of caution if you have a water softener ensure that this is closed off and open on the bypass as many boilers will corrode if filled with softened water. remeber to close the bypass on completion and open up both sides of the water softner. also remeber to close the filling loop/link as some people dont and it P's out the pressure relief.
