The correct method to tile, mortar bed or dot and dab?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM
Hi, I have a question regarding my tiled bathroom which I believe to have been done to a good standard by the person who fitter my kitchen. It's just the plumber mentioned that my tiles have been dabbed and that's not the correct method. Probably different people do it in different ways but I just wanted a professional opinion. Bathroom is tiled from floor to ceiling. Tiles are made from porcelain, mapei floor and wall tile adhesive used. Grey in colour and white wall tile adhesive.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Correct method: Notched trowel, 100% coverage, don't accept anything less. Adhesive should state that it is suitable for porcelain tiles, generally this is a cement based adhesive in powder form. If not then there is a good chance that they will not adhere correctly.

dot and dab a definate no no it leaves voids at the back of tiles correct method would be spread adhesive onto wall using a suitably sized notched trowel combing in one direction then affix tiles using a slight sliding movement accross the ribs of adhesive collapsing the ribs into eachother creating 100% coverage for large format tiles back buttering the tile also may need to be done to get the desired contact with the wall but never dot and dab.
