Tiling

Tiling onto wooden floorboards

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Hi All Any advice welcome. I am looking to tile my kitchen with 10mm thick porcelain tiles (60x60cm). The subfloor is tongue and groove wooden floorboards. They aren't 100% flat as are fairly old and on closer inspection have a tiny ridge at the joints. I was looking to put down a 6mm tile backer board with bed of 5mm adhesive and screw into the floorboards. (any advice on brand here would be fantastic). Can I just put a flexible tile adhesive straight onto the floorboards, if so what type and brand tile adhesive? Do I need to put a primer down on the floorboards first like BAL primer APD? I assume after that just a jointing tape and more adhesive on the joints ready for tiling. Any advice here about best practice and what to buy is greatly appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As above. Fit a ply board but also take note of the thickness of the ply, adhesive and tiles, this may end up in having to shave the bottoms of your doors. Obviously the thicker the ply the better as it will make tiling easier with leveling etc. Again also use a flexible adhesive and grout and make sure you purchase floor adhesive and grout and buy the correct floor adhesive trowel. Yet again, incorrect advice from none tilers.... Ply is not the right choice....it is moisture unstable. It moves and you will get cracks in tiles at the joints of the ply. A uncoupling membrane such as Ditra-25 would need to be used before tiling, adding to the expense. Your suggestion of HardieBacker is correct. Screw wooden floor down first to make stable. Prime as per your chosen adhesive manufacturers instructions. Trowel floor with thinset adhesive. This is not to stick boards, but to act as a gap filler to take out any undulations in floor boards. Screw 6mm backer boards down every 300mm, this id doing the fixing not the adhesive. Always for the manufacturers advice on fixing your chosen adhesive and boards. This can be found on there website Julian

I would advise a 9mm ply at least still with a flexible adhesive
