Plasterboards on uneven joists

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

I'm going to fit plasterboards on a ceiling. The joists are a bit uneven - some protrude more than others so plasterboards won't hang flat. Shall I rectify this before fixing plasterboards or this will be flatten when putting plaster? Would 2 layers of skim plaster be enough or would it need base layer too?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Id say stick the boards up, then level it all off with carlite (bonding coat) then plaster, you can build out the uneven ceiling with your first coat of plaster, but as a matter of preference, I would say carlite it.

Hi Tomm, if you have high ceilings you could build a new frame below, then fit boards level, lot less work the bonding and skimming twice, If low ceiling height add timbers to smaller joists or packers to bring level then board.

Any decent plasterer would scrim up and skim as normal but with an 18inch finishing trowel and an extra bag of finish. I have done a few of these just lay on a bit thicker if required put an additional coat on .
