how do I break down and remove rock hard adhesive/grout from on top of Victorian tiles?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

When we moved into our Victorian house, we unearthed an original tiles hallway underneath the black tiles we saw. I spent some days carefully lifting all of the black tiles to find a beautiful, and good condition Victorian geometric tiled floor. However, although the I have chipped lots away, there are still patches of rock hard adhesive or grout from the bottom of the old tiles stuck to the floor. I was recommended to use caustic soda, which I did to no results. I am out of ideas. Does anyone know what I could use to break it down easily without damaging the original tiles?

Hello,You could try a mild acid which is used for cleaning cement residue bought from builder merchants,if this does not work there is a acid called Spirit of salts which is very strong and you will not protection from the acid and vapour, this was always purchased from chemist a long time ago but do not know were this can be purchased from now, what ever you use it will mark the geo tiles.
