Is there a way to tell if a wall is load-bearing?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM
We are looking for an architect (see job posted) for kitchen extension but initially it would be great to know whether we can take a certain wall down - and if it IS load-bearing, can a support be put in its place? New layout possibilities severely limited if the wall has to stay there. Thanks

Hi Julia
A load bearing wall can be removed once a structural member has been installed to support the wall or floor joists sitting on it.
Permission is reqd from district council You will need to contact someone like me, I'm in Glasgow, to submit drawings etc to council

If there are no walls above, and there are no joists resting on it, it's 100% not load bearing and you can knock it down, if anything is on top, you will need to hire an engineer, most likely install an rsj, people do carry it out themselves, but without that engineer getting involved, good luck selling the house.

Hi Julia, it's easy to work out if it's load bearing, but easier again to as a builder it would only take him 15 mins or so, once he says yes, get a structural engineer to draw you some calculations for Rsj, best to order these yourself by getting a quote from local steel company giving them the calcs from engineer, purchase your pad stones from builders merchant, and inform council to proceed.
Then you just need a labour price. Good luck
