What's involved in levelling an old bedroom floor?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hello I'm renovating a second floor bedroom in an old Victorian terraced property. The current floor is laminate on top of old floorboards. It's very uneven, runs off to one side, and is soft and squeaky in places. I'm currently lifting the existing laminate, and looking to have someone come in and repair the floor and lay new engineered wood and skirting. So what's involved in levelling the floor, and ensuring the new floor has a nice solid finish, completely even, with no run off, squeaks, etc? What should I be prepared to pay? The room is 13ft * 13ft.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi the best way would be to fix any loose boards down, plywood the whole floor screwed down at 8" centres, then level it off with a latex self levelling screed. You will probably never get it 100% level depending on how far the building has crept but you can achieve a good solid subfloor for your new flooring. I have done a few properties in Edinburghs old town this way to good results!

Hi I would install thick approximately 25mm-30mm flooring chipboard preferably the ones with acoustic padding. On top of that I would screw them every 200mm just in case. I hope this helps Adam
