Computer network connection from house to garden office

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

I'm currently installing a studio office in my garden and want to run a cable for connecting the new studio to the existing computer network in my house. I currently use a netgear GS724T smart switch as a router and will install another in the studio. This will in turn supply network connectivity for 5-6 computers, printers, wifi, apple TV, sonos etc. the studio is approximately 20m away from the house, 40m away from the smart switch in the house. What is the best way to run a connection between the smart switches?

Best to install a Cat5e or to future proof a Cat6 externally rated cable. At each end install a wall box with a RJ45 outlet module. From each end install a data patch lead and plug into each hub.

hi, the best way to connect both networks together would be to use external grade cat6 cable. depending on the cable route, for example if you are burying the cable underground you might want to consider running it in a protective conduit. Thanks ConneX cable solutions.

Hi, As other mention run external grade cable, either Cat 5e or Cat 6 will be fine, and I would install this within some ducting in the ground. Terminate at both ends within a wall outlet and use patch lead to connect to the switches at either ends. TechByte Consulting.

Your best option is to run Outdoor rates cat6 either buried or overhead attached to steel cable to avoid wind damage, the reason to use cat 6 over cat5 or cat5e is it carries faster speed and can be run a longer distance before the drop and is generally future proof for the foreseeable. it's also a thicker more durable cable. you will need to terminate both ends either at an rj45 wall port or an rj45 male connection into the switch at the house to feed the connection and either the end device or a second switch in the shed to share the connection. if burying the cable I would advice running it in some for of ducting or conduit and keeping it out of the way of any weigh bearing ground such as pathways.
