Tiling onto chipboard flooring

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

Hi I have a 22mm water resistant tongue and groove chipboard floor glued and screwed onto timber joists. The joists are at 300 centres and the floor is pretty solid. I plan to lay 600x600 porcelain tiles and have been advised to use a flexible adhesive. Do I need to seal the chipboard boards first? If so, what with. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, the best thing to use is either 6mm tilebacker board glue and screwed or Ditra uncoupling mat fixed using floor tile adhesive over the chipboard ,I would not use ply as this can still be problematic, prime the chipboard with sbr not pva,

Hi, I cannot imagine it would be a healthy thing if water some how managed to get under the tiles, as water would just cause the chip board to expand and contract. Your best bet is over boarding the floor with 6-12ml exterior grade ply, fairly cheap, you can just fix the ply to the existing chip board and doing this will save you time and money in the long run.
