New double glazing in house with no lintels
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.00 PM
We bought our house last year and the double glazing is very old so we want to replace it. A survey for sonething else suggested there are no lintels above the windows. How would find out for certain and get them put in? Would a glazing company do it or would we have to hire a builder first, then a glazing company? Thanks

NO LINTELS ????
The inner and outer skin would have to be shored up with acro props/strong boys then remove the outer brickwork & inner block work
insert the lintel build the inner skin first ( blockwork) fitting a DPC tray to the block work dropping down and covering the lintel extending 100mm past the lintel with ends turned up against nearest brick
Rebuild brickwork fit weep vents on the ends of the turned up DPC
make sure the bed joints on the new brickwork meeting the existing are full
cheers Peter

This can be easily identified by straigt-forward visual inspection and, if that doesn't confirm it, use an endoscope type camera to look in cavities. Failing all that, a little opening up of the ends of the areas above windows will show (or not) lintels.
The window company may be able to install the lintels, depends on the competency of their guys.
However, the FENSA certificate you get for the windows WILL NOT cover the lintel fitting. This aspect MUST be done under LABC (building control) or an alternative Approved Inspector.
Hope that helps, thanks, Jason.
