Plastering & Rendering

Is this artex or just a bad plaster job?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.00 PM

I'm trying to determine whether the small amount of textured ceiling in our galley kitchen is artex or thickly laid on plaster. I'm on the verge of looking for a local testing company to check but thought I'd get some advice first. The annoying thing is that there is an adjoining pantry area that looks like it could have been done at a separate time - it's tiny in size but I expect I would still need to pay for two samples. The ceiling of the kitchen has it laid on much more thickly. The walls of the kitchen and also the ceiling of the ajoining pantry are extremely shallow. The ceiling is underneath a flat roof and there's signs of hairline cracks in the ceiling so ideally I'd like to take it down and reboard it as if there is asbestos, even the low level of disturbance would worry me. I can then get someone in to plaster it. Here is a link to some pictures: http://bit.ly/1SrpVNY Really appreciate the help!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It definitely looks like a textured coating. Even a novice plasterer would not skim a ceiling so poorly (hopefully). For the cost of a sample it is worth testing. Be aware though it is only likely to be white asbestos which is non licensed so as long as you dispose of it correctly through the local authority (which may cost you nothing) - it should not cost you the earth. It appears to be artex, but I'm judging this from the colour. If you sand it a little (wearing a mask), then the colour of the dust will show you whether it's artex or plaster, and you can proceed from there.
