Is this artex or just a bad plaster job?

I'm trying to determine whether the small amount of textured ceiling in our galley kitchen is artex or thickly laid on plaster. I'm on the verge of looking for a local testing company to check but thought I'd get some advice first. The annoying thing is that there is an adjoining pantry area that looks like it could have been done at a separate time - it's tiny in size but I expect I would still need to pay for two samples. The ceiling of the kitchen has it laid on much more thickly. The walls of the kitchen and also the ceiling of the ajoining pantry are extremely shallow. The ceiling is underneath a flat roof and there's signs of hairline cracks in the ceiling so ideally I'd like to take it down and reboard it as if there is asbestos, even the low level of disturbance would worry me.
