Windows & Door fitting

Is it reasonable to expect all damage caused by new windows being fitted to be repaired?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

I had two new windows fitted and in the process, they have damaged the outside of the wall, they knocked two big patches of newly painted rough casting off the wall. They have fixed it but not painted it, is it within my rights to expect it to be painted as it was before they caused the damage? There is also a hole in my wall on the outside which they have just filled in with clear silicone, can I ask them to put that back the way it was? And they also damaged the walls inside as well, can ask them to fill the holes and cracks and paint it so it is as it was before?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi read through their ts & cs mine only cover making good any render/plaster decorating is down to the home owner. BUT I always point out the pitfalls of intalling new windows in rendered buildings Lee

Render is always a difficult issue. In particular before the installation has commenced. The factors of age, original quality and craftmenship of installation of the render all play a part. I instruct my surveyors and installers to inform the customer before we remove any windows or doors that there will be an element of redecoration required. We will make good any fallen or removed render around the reveal only and we leave it for the customer to repaint. You must also give consideration that to colour match paint itself is almost impossible. Render can be very trying for company and customer alike but it would be a little unreasonable to expect a company to leave the new installation in the same decorative state as the installation was before it started. It is almost like expecting the company to redecorate the wallpaper internally if any was disturbed. Regarding the hole filled with silicon. In this case, it depends on the diameter of the hole filled. Silicon is not best used as a filler, it is a sealant.
