Bricklaying & Repointing

Penetrating damp

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

Hi. We recently had a room replastered and repainted. The painter pointed out that one patch of the wall (a circle 3 inches wide) was flaking away as damp was entering the wall. He believed this was due to the plants growing on the outside of the wall had penetrated the brick and allowed moisture in. We have now removed the plants. The damp patch has now spread to about 2 to 3 feet wide. Should we get a tradesmen in to repoint the brickwork etc and make sure it is watertight or is there another option we should pursue? Thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Does your outer wall have a cavity? if so check that there is no rubble bridging the outer to the inner wall, also if this cavity has been insulated this potential obstruction will cause a cold bridge and damp spots will form there. Also check the outer wall has a dpc and that the ground level outside is 150mm minimum below it. I have rarely encountered this problem being just the condition of the brickwork pointing externally, unless the bricks themselves have badly delaminated.
