"ARE THERE REGULATIONS AS TO WHERE LIGHT SWITCHES NEED TO BE PLACED. IN A NEW BUILD APARTMENT I HAVE JUST BROUGHT THE LIGHT SWITCHES TO THE LIVING AREAR ARE BEHIND THE DOOR TO THE ROOM WHEN YOU ENTER. YOU HAVE TO CLOSE THE DOOR TO GET ACCESS TO THE SWITCHES"
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Bob,
I think this is more a case of common sense not regulation. Were the doors rehung at some point leaving the switches behind the doors? That sometimes happens due to not wanting to relocate the switch.
Hope that makes sense?
All the best

If it's a new build then its a cock up. Not strictly against any regs but ask the developers to put it right.

Either the door has been hung the wrong way round or the spark first fixing the electrics wired it to the wrong side. Or there is a possibility that plans were changed after initial work had been done. It should have been noticed and rectified a long time before the house was completed regardless.
The only regulations we work to in regards to positioning of the light switches are when it comes to height, and that is that the top of the switch must be no higher than 1200mm from finished floor level.

hi bob
i cant say there is a reg on this its more common sense to be honest what you may find is the door should have opened the other way and for some reson the door had been hung the way it is meaning that the switch is in the wrong pleace with this being a new build i think this could be the case you find this in alot of older houses when they changed which way the door was hung
hope this helps

Have a look at other properties and see if they have the switch behind the door. I would say this was an error during first fix on your property.
You could:-
Ask the builder to move the switch.
Failing that you could go down the smart home route and have a Google/Alexa hub and lamp installed. In this case the light switch is left on and you simply say “Ok google hall light on” or “Ok google hall light at 50%” etc you can also set it to come on and off when you want or even turn light on when your on your sun bed on holiday!!!
Regarding regs on light switch position there is only max height of 1200mm.
