Why build a 2nd storey extension higher than the original floor?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi. I have just bought a house and it has been extended to include a 4th bedroom. The 2nd storey extension has been built to the side of the house over the old garage so access is a left tuen at the top of the stairs. There is a step up, maybe about 10 inches or so, into that room. My question is, why build this with a step rather than just keeping it on the same level as the existing floor? It adds an extra hazard, especially if you have young kids like I do. Is lowering the floor feasible or not? I imagine it would be a big job. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi,with out actually seeing the build up of your property and the problem you have ,I can only assume that the garage floor to ceiling height is clearly higher than the internal house floor to ceiling heights based on the step you mention, what are the floor heights from house to garage ? do you have to step up,down or are both levels on the same plane. In order to achieve the desired head height in your house when your house was first build, there would have been no consideration as to extending your garage into a upper dwelling, your garage in fact may be an add on at some point in time... As to bring the two floor levels to the same plane, then yes this would not be a weekend task, engineers-architects etc etc . would need to view first hand or see some archive drawings (plans) in order to correctly advise , but think with the info supplied we are not far off the mark Hope this helps Phil
