Painting & Decorating

Using water-based sealer/primer as alternative to 'Mist Coating' plastered walls

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

Hello, I have read much of the advice posted here about using an emulsion paint diluted by 50% as a 'mist coat' when painting new plastered walls (that have dried sufficiently). I understand that, this approach is advised as a cost-effective way of commencing the preparation part when painting new plastered walls. I have seen a product called "Zinsser Bull's-Eye 123". This product is mentioned in a youtube video on painting the plastered surfaces above the galvanised beads to prevent any rust stains becoming prominent over time. I am wondering whether it would be okay to use this product as a base coat before painting? I know it would be expensive, but assuming my primary motivation is to have the paint job done to the highest quality (and long term durability), would this be the wrong way to do as the first step in preparing the walls? I look forward to your response. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ref your Question: Its unnecessary to use zinsser bulls eye as a primer for your walls you would only have to dilute this product the same as you would an emulsion for your first-second coat this is due to the porosity of the newly plastered surface. A good finish will be achieved by the correct piled nape (short piled), Quality paints for durability and applying the paint in the right way for finish. I would apply the mist coat (diluted emulsion) then do any light preparation between coats (normally four coats are sufficient I prefer One mist coats then Two top coats the first Top coat being thinned by 10% water the Second top coat neat building up the finish then add a Fourth if required ) The First -Second coats will shows up any marks on the wall that are not visible when starring at bear plaster. This way is more labor intensive but I guess you will sacrifice this if it means getting a better finish I hope this helps you and Good luck.
