Can a combi boiler be used with a whole house water softener?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

We have a plumbed in water softener and are in the process of looking at replacing our current system boiler for a new combination boiler. I had British Gas round to provide a quote but the adviser wasn't sure whether a combi could be used with a water softener. I can understand the need to bypass the softener when filling the heating circuit but not for normal hot tap water. Any help would be appreciated.

A water softener actually adds salt to the water which increases its corrosive properties. Water conditioners can be used on whole house supplies but when softeners are fitted there must be a seperate drinking water tap, and not recommended for the heating system because is highly corrosive water which will attack the heating exchangers made from aluminium
