Wooden front door that expands in the winter

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi, The wooden front door of my property always expands in the winter and is very difficult to open and close. I've had the door planed in the past which worked for a while but then expanded again. I would be grateful of any advice as to what could be done to rectify the problem for good. Many thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Unfortunately timber being a natural product will always move with temperatures and moisture however I would recommend you have the door planed again I would then either paint or treat/seal with cuprinol or some form of recommended treatment on all exposed edges including the top and bottom of the door were the mortice and tennon joints are as well as the front and back surface that should prevent the door expanding as much in the future the other alternative is to wait for the weather to pick up and the door should naturally contract at that point then treat paint the door. I hope this helps sorry couldn't advise more effortless solution
