Banging radiator
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.17 PM
We had a new boiler fitted last winter and now every time we put the heating on, the radiator in the front room starts banging and the only way to stop this is to turn it down. So we do this and it starts banging a little while later. So we sit in the front room with jumpers and duvets! Can anyone help shed some light on what this could be? Thank you

The chances the banging is being caused by the thermostatic radiator valve fitted to the wrong side. Check the arrow of flow indicator on the thermostatic valve. If it is pointing towards the radiator then it should be fitted to the 'flow' (the hotter pipe of the two) if it is pointing away it should be fitted to the 'return'. If it is fitted incorrectly then the valve will 'fight' with the pump to close and this will cause a banging noise in the radiator. Changing the head position will stop the noise until it tries to close again. The valve basically needs turning around or fitted to the other end of the radiator.

I'm not a plumber so may well be corrected in this, but banging from central heating pipes and radiators, is generally caused by furniture being very close to either the pipe or radiator, and the expansion caused by the heat causes the knocking. So the first thing I would check is whether or not there is any hard furniture touching the pipes or radiator.
