Will I need to install an RSJ to support a mezzanine level in my sitting room
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.17 PM
I would like to install a mezzanine level in my converted barn. The sitting room is on the first floor of the house and is double height right up to the rafters. There is an original A frame beam along the length of the room, where I would like the mezzanine to go. Can the new floor be attached to this beam, or will an RSJ be needed, and also how do you attach the floor to the long wall side. There is a huge chimney breast here, which is not original. Will the present structure take the weight of a new floor. Many thanks, Sarah

You would need to get a structural engineer to produce some calculations for you as these are the only calculation the building dept will accept, it sounds like getting an architect in would help too.

Depends on which way your joists run. If they will run into the proposed steel then yes presuming the mezzanine to be of some size. If they run parallel then not really, a flitch beam may be all that’s required. Configuration is the key.
