How to get a clean straight finish applying silicone along a Mosaic tiled wall and work top?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.17 PM

We recently had our kitchen splash back tiled using small hexagon shaped mosaic tiles. The tiler originally used grout along tile/bench join but this cracked and flaked off within days. He then returned and applied silicone over the grout. The silicon starts off ok and is quite straight and even but then it gets very messy and seeps up the spaces between each tile and over some tiles but not others. It is a mid grey colour on white tiles so it really stands out. He told me it would wipe off the grout & tiles where it has gone over when it dries as it is so thin in those areas but it hasnt, it has instead in some parts just pealed down and sort of beaded. It looks terrible. As it looks as though we are going to have to try and fix it ourselves is there a method like say using tape first that would help get a neater finish? The company are refusing to redo it saying thats as good as finish as you can get with mosaic tiles and silicone. Should we be accepting this as correct?

When ever I apply silicon sealant I first use masking tape on the surfaces, this ensures that the finish is nice and straight, make sure you remove the masking tape whilst the silicon is still wet though.

Firstly you need to remove the old using a stantly knife and the yellow flat scraper with stanley blade. Mosiacs are really difficult to silicon so you need good siliconer, if you give it a go you need to cut small amount off the nozzle and try to silicon at even speed . Then wet your finger in your mouth and run it along the silicon to smooth out chris
