Windows & Door fitting

New doors and windows fitted, but don't seem weatherproof

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

I've just had a new upvc front door and new windows (front and back) fitted. Since they've been fitted, we now water coming into our bedroom when the rain is bad. It appears to come in above the frame, and drips/pours down the frame once inside. Similarly, we now have water coming in from above the new front door - seems to come in at the top of the frame then drips from there. Finally, we can feel a draught from around the edge of the new front door and initially, the wind was whistling through quite loudly. We have had the fitters back who added a bit more sealant around inside of the front door, but we can still feel the draught in places. They said that the leaks must be coming from somewhere higher than the window and the front door, reaching the new units, then running inside; and that perhaps the previous units had been so inferior that the water used to find ways through the previous units to the outside, whereas the new units are so sealed, the water has nowhere to go but inside. Could this be correct? My worry is that there should be more than a thin strip of sealant preventing the wind from entering the house so perhaps not enough caulk or plaster has been put around the new front door, and this might be the problem with above the door and bedroom window also? I don't know, I'm not a window fitter - I'm just trying to find out whether this is something the company should be looking into more, rather than just putting on a little extra sealant? Any advice welcome, and thank you for your help.

Hi this sounds like the windows and doors have not been fitted properly. what i mean by this is that the window should be fitted and sealed with a expanding foam product or simliar to fill any gaps round the newly installed frame to stop all elements especially rain from exterior side of the frame this also helps to insulate and minimises loss of heat. another possibility would be that of the actual manufacture of the windows i.e the gasket seals round the openings of the windows are faulty. with regards to rain inlet it could possibly be a mortar problem where there are cracks in the brickwork rain gets in and finds its way into the cavity which leads to windows and doors openings also I hope this helps, Thanks Paul

Hi there , the draught will be comeing inn through the front door were it isnt fitted perfectly ,when you shut your front door it should squeeze up against the seals all around the door , thus stopping all wind from comeing through , cheers Kev

It sounds as if doors are either not in bang on straight or if they are not foamed. Same with window I dont think they are foamed and sealed. As with above answer if doors not straight the door slab/opener will not close tight
