Paint for picture rails and skirting boards
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.31 PM
Just moved into a property with magnolia gloss paint (I think) on the pic rail and skirting boards.. its very shiny anyway. I wanted to freshen it up a bit with a new lick of paint. I painted over it with one coat of white satin water based but its not very shiny & I don't like the finish, even on a small bit where I put 2 coats. Can I paint over this with gloss?

There are three main finishes you would put on wood work. Eggshell - Low sheen, Satin - Mid Sheen and Gloss, this is the shiniest. I would recommend you use a minimum of two coats no matter what you are painting. In answer to your question you can paint over it yes, key the surface with some very fine sand paper after a day. Although its waterbased (Quick drying) it will still be curing, water based paint doesn't not rub down well so be gentle.

Just to let you know in my experience there is no such thing as just a lick of paint, prepare the surface then apply two coats of white oil based gloss.
