Cold Radiator and Cold Towel Rail upstairs all of a sudden?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hello, I recently had a radiator changed downstairs, since then my bedroom and bathroom rail have stopped working and it's freezing!! The 2nd upstairs bedroom radiator works fine and is super hot as are all the others. Do I have an airlock? I have bled all my Rads and no air comes out and I've taken 4 buckets of water out of the towel rail with no air? I have a glowworm 30 combie boiler in the cellar and as far as I can tell no tank in the attic. Any help is much appreciated as I no longer want to sleep fully dressed for an expedition haha

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The problem you have is called Air pocket. You do not require a plumber to fix this problem. Turn one side off on all the working radiators (the radiators which heat up) turn your heating on, take the air out of non working radiators it will heat up. Then slowly turn half on all the radiators wait 5 minutes, then fully on all the radiators. This is the best method to fix the problem

I wouldn't waste your time trying to find out why, just get your plumber who replaced the radiator back in to sort out the problem. Clearly in replacing the radiator he would have had to drain the system, sounds like he didn't prime the system as he should have to me.

You may like to try and balance your systems heating to see if that makes a difference ,turn all your thermostatic valves down to about 2.5 and see if that allows the system to heat at a moderate tempeture?.If that doesnt work call the plumber back.

As started above your new radiator is robbing the rest of the system of water, theres a lot of technical ins and outs of why but in a nutshell each radiator has a capacity (Kw) rating, some are larger in capacity than others and water will always follow its easiest route. Try working away from the boiler shutting down the brass valve with a four way key to 1 turn open from closes, note always leave the furthest radiator ( or in your case coldest radiator) fully open
