Gas Works

Recently serviced boiler now making an intermittent noise (sounds like wind chime!)

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hello I wonder if anyone can advise - I am recently widowed and so took out a BT homecare cover - our boiler is a Worcester combi and is 8/9 years old. we have never experienced problems with it - Britich gas engineer came for the intital assessment visit and serviced the bolier - all was considered OK however the next day I heard an unusual intermittent noise outside - it was a humming noise which lasted about 3-4 mins and then went away. my neighbours could hear it too and suggested it might be the boiler - unfortunately I did not get in touch with British gas within 14 days and so not face a £99 fee if I have an engineer come to look at despite the fact that I am positive that this occurred as a consequence of the boiler - my question is - can any damage occur to the boiler or central heating system if I leave it? everything works still. thanks

Hi Judith. Sorry to hear about losing your husband. and of course the problems with your boiler. I don't think I can pinpoint what is making the noise within you're boiler. It would be a mistake for me to try. Like all mechanical things with moving parts things break down. I would suggest you contact British Gas to have the engineer back to check out the noise. He was the last engineer to visit. I did not know that after fourteen days if the problem persists then there is a further call out charge. That is my advice to give. At the weekend I carried out a service on two fires for a customer. I asked who looks after the central heating boiler. I was told that she had a maintenance plan which costs her £30 per month. Which she has been paying for seven years. I asked how many times she has had to call the engineer out and she said she had had them out one time but it ended up being something simple. If you do the maths she has paid about two and half thousand pounds. I told her when I fit a boiler I always specify giving a seven year warranty, this with parts and labour manufacturers guarantee. Which basically means, whatever or whenever the boiler breaks down within the seven years it will be repaired at free of any cost. According to the figures quoted, if the householder saves the thirty pounds per month after the seven years this should cover a new replacement. Good luck with British Gas. Kind regards. Combigas.
