Lime mortar repointing

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.35 PM

Hi guys 1930's detached house; exposed brickwork on front/lower floor only. Previous owner had the brickwork repointed but it was done in cement. Existing mortar contains lime. Some of the cement pointing is failing, as expected. Question 1: Do I need to actively remove the cement pointing that hasn't failed yet, or can I leave it? I believe it was max 1/1.5cm deep... would this amount of cement be sufficient to cause problems to the bricks? Question 2: I plan to use NHL 3.5 lime mortar to fix the pointing. Is this something I could pull off as a DIY job or is the stuff really hard to work with? thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Is the building listed? If so it will need to be replaced with lime. Any job I do that has lime in the existing mortar, will be replaced using lime. Working with lime is no different than working without it. Just be careful, it can be very irritating! Hope this helps you out! Good luck.
