fixings

HI I have a fairly new house, with the dreaded dot and dab walls with thermolite blocks behind, I seem to have a nightmare fixing anything to it securly. Would like fix 3 inch screws to it as an example, is there a tryed and tested way of doing so, what depth should I drill in. Do I tap in the plug a certain distance, as there is a small gap, how do the pros fix heavy items tightly. What fixings do you use? Just looking for help on different methods Kind Regards Dave

Dot & Dab, there's lots of alternatives, mainly dependant on how heavy the Item is? You can buy metal screw in plugs which take any size 8 screw, from wicks etc, you can tap the wall locating the actual dab & drill into that, or more extreme try chemical fixing on a 75-100mm no 8 bolt, this obviously will have a nut on the face, but if fitted correctly will hold most things. There are still other way's but I hope this helps.

Different people have different prefferences on fixings but if your looking for a reliable easy to do fixing on dry wall try frame fixings (screws with long plugs combined) because the plug is full length the plasterboard should not crush unless your fixing seriously over tight. full range of sizes in the screwfix catalogue. Recomend minimum hope this helps.

Yes drill into the blocks behind, use a brown rawl plug and a 3 inch screw, make sure the screw is fairly fat otherwise it will just spin in the plug.
Do not over tighten the screw or it will crack the plasterboard

If its dot and dab on top of thermalite block i would use in most cases the screwin plaster board fixings as they hold most light to medium wieght items for heavy items I usually use a self tapping screw that is used for brick and block work. This usually requires a 6mm whole to be drilled but in the case of thermalite block I drill a 4mm hole. This allows for the screw to get a secure grip on the block. Also if you can place your fixing were there is a dot of plaster this also helps to secure things.

In most cases try to use manufactured raw-plugs. BUT i nearly always use wooden dowel for any masonry fix, with thermalite drill say 10mm hole fill with expanding wood glue tap in a over-sized square dowel. let glue set. extremely strong!
