Correcting a bad plastering job

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.59 PM

We had a bare brick wall to plaster and hired a tradesman who has done a really bad job of it. The wall is uneven and steps in and out a lot, but he has only used one layer of bonding plaster on it, which has left it lumpy with dips and parts stepping out. He then started to apply multifinish and planned to do a couple of thick coats to even the wall out. I have asked him not to come back as I didn't think it looked right. We had other plasterers repairing walls after dpc and they have done a fantastic job. And no point were the walls lumpy, even with undercoats. I have knocked off the multifinish layer of which varied in depth between 1mm - 8mm (and that was meant to be first coat). My question is - is it possible to apply another coat of bonding over the previous coat to level things out and then skim? the bonding did not completely dry yet. Or should we knock it back to brick again?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. It depends on how bad the job is that he done. You don't want the coat to be to thin in places where he was high and thick in others where he was low. I would recommend going back to brickwork and starting again. I would recommend dot and dabbing with plasterboard and then skimming then you will have an even surface all over. Hope this helps Agdplastering

Hello I agree with AGD Plastering if the wall has got areas where it really shows it is higher than other parts then it would be best to knock the wall back to brickkwork and then use the dot and dab method to place plasterboard over the brick, as it is stated above you will then have a fat clean surface to start again on.
