Bricklaying & Repointing

Flat brick arch

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi, we have an 1890s property that has flat brick arches over the windows apart from one hideous 1970s casement that a previous owner put in, I am thinking of restoring it to a flat brick arch and have seen the ready made ones online but can they still be hand made by a bricky and what kind of lintel would it need for a solid 215mm wall? thanks PL

Hello plongs2, There are still a few brick masons that can lay cut and rubbed gauged voussoirs who understand the geometry involved and of course lime mortars. A 'bricky' can throw a few blobs of 6:1:1 down to lay an off the shelf ibstock fake one no problems at all. Some say they use lime but its just hydrated lime with cement to aid plasticity not natural hydraulic lime. Too many times I see ruined gauged arches ruined with cementitious mortars sometimes they do try by using white cement but to no avail. The Victorian craftsmen will be stirring in there graves! But like I said you might just be lucky and find a good brick layer who appreciates craft skills. Hope this helps Chris EHR

Hi. I am guessing the arch you talk of is a 'gauged camber arch' that appears to be flat but has a very shallow arch, around 1mm per 100mm. It is possible to find a brick mason as I myself am one. It just depends where you live. Be prepared to pay decent money though as the materials needed for gauged brickwork are expensive and the skills required for this work aren't cheap either! You can buy pre cut gauged arches from lambs or bulmers brick makers and then pay a brick mason to build it or employ an experienced brick mason to do it all. Just depends where you are and what you want to do.
