pre tiling ply on a pre exixsting wooden and recently screeded extension

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi, Sorry if this has been asked already. I've just had an extension to my kitchen screeded and the kitchen is being fitted this weekend. Before the kitchen intallation starts I'd hoped to put some ply across the old suspended timber floor to try to lose some of the bounce so that it can be tiled and then the same on the new block/ beam / screed floor so the the heights remain the same. On top of the ply I was going to use a levelling compound as there is a bit of a slope and depression going on in the timber section. Could anyone please tell me if : I need to use a membrane under the ply on either section. If I can glue the ply to the screed or do I have to mechanically fix it and if so at what intervals If I can apply a levelling compound directly to the ply Any other things to watch out for / tips in general. Many thanks, Jim.

why would you want to ply the concrete . you need to ply your old existing timber floor so that the ply over laps the area where the new extension begins by about 8-10 inches this overlap should be glued, drilled and plugged to the concrete remembering how deep this new sub floor is as you do not want to damage the membrane. once this is achieved a good prime of the concrete and then use a levelling compound to marry the two areas together. once the two areas are the same height use a ardex feather edge Finnish to complete the joined areas.
