Conservatories

walls around base of conservatory

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.59 PM

Hi, have some tradesmen here at the minute. We are having a conservatory built, to bring it level with the house meant a substantial base going down. a single skin wall was built, mixture of brick and blocks. this was left to set and then concrete poured in (5.5 tons). The wall gave way and concrete poured into the garden. This was cleared up, front wall removed and boarding and props put in place and concrete put back in place. Obviously made us concerned about if these guys knew what they were doing. The conservatory will be glass to the floor, so they question is should the wall surrounding the base be cavity or not? Also given the description above what other things should I be asking? Any help appreciated, the works in progress and I need to know if I need them to cease until I can trust what's happening! Hi Jetflow Drains, thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure that other ways would have been better too... The concrete poured in was probably about 2ft deep, if not a little more. the area was 4000x3000. Its being done at my Mums, so I didn't see what had been done with the foundations (its going on top of an old patio and they broke out some existing steps, I assume that the patio was also broken out and foundations dug for the walls). The conservatory will be fully glass to the floor. How does it work with a single skin brick wall with a membrane in contact with the concrete base? is there a possible problem over time with damp here? The company doesn't start with an A. The work is being done in the south east, Barnehurst area, but the company isn't local.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

2ft of concrete sounds a bit too much for a conservitry, my opinioin would to have back filled filled with hardcore if no insulation is required, the menbrain under the concrete and i asume it will go under the frame of the glass would be right, as for the brick and block work it would only need to be a single skin wall hope this james

My opinion as I have done many a base for a conservatory is to shutter off if it is higher than ground level and pour concrete in. If you was wanting a wall to go round edge or concrete base then why not do it after install of conservatory. Hope this helps. Sounds a bit like you got bill n ben. There company doesn't happen to start with the letter A. Do they.

Ideally what you need, it's probably too late now, is to have a single skin to damp course level, with the central area dug out, then hardcore onto the existing ground, then insulation followed by a polothene membrane which will extend over the single skin brickwork. Your concrete will then go in, about 150mm level with the brickwork. Chris.
