Removal or replacement of decorative boards

We're looking for a house in the Oakham / Uppingham area but lots of houses of a certain age have decorative boards on the outside (see attached for an example. We've not looked at this house but it gives you an idea.) Is it possible to take these back to the brink or replace them with a rendered section?
