Is it OK to remove all the wood from the bottom for a hollowed door?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi, I have a B&Q hollowed door and it's a bit taller than the door frame. I have to remove quite a lot (about 3 cm) which has cut all the wood from the bottom and it can be seen from the bottom the door is hollowed inside (after fitted, not visible though). Can I ask whether this is OK or I should have cut (planed) at both top and bottom?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Ideally, you should have trimmed both ends of the door. The inside of the door is probably filled with an expanded cardboard lattice. It is possible to fit a piece of softwood into the void to strengthen to bottom of the door. Hope that helps

Yes in Theory they say you can't cut that much off. However if you are as good as me you always come up with a solution. May be take 5mm or 10mm of the top if you want. Then take the rest of the required cut from the door. The bit that falls off i then proceed to chisel off the outer MDF face which should leave the remaining timber. just put some wood glue onto the timber and proceed to knock the timber into the hollow with a hammer and leave to dry. I've done this 4 or 5 times and it works. Thanks
