New roof or small velux
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM
Hi, We have a 5m x5m single storey extension on the rear of our house. We would like to get some more natural light, hence we are thinking of adding some velux's windows The roof is a 3 way hip, with a centre flat area of 3m x 2m. I guess it has been done this way to provide a reasonable slope on the tiled areas, and get around the issue that the roof can only rise about 1m due to window of upstairs room. The room is currently equipped with a flat ceiling inside. There are no access points, so current roof frame work cannot be seen. From ceiling nails it looks like the rafters are around 600mm apart, so we are thinking a velux's will fit. The downside of fitting a velux would be that from inside we would only be able to flare the plaster on 2 sides. In addition, the sloped tile sides of the roof are quite short, and we are concerned about ending up with just 4 small portholes. The alternative is to have the roof redesigned. If we go this way, should we look at a single slope, or can we have a shallow hip to remove the flat roof section. Any new roof will have the ceiling installed to suit the new roof Response to suggestions 1) Sun pipes, will provide some light, but no visual view of the sky, so these are discounted. 2) Not sure how this saves a lot of work, as I am guessing the current roof trusses will still need to be re-engineered to form the opening for the skylight and then the tunnel down to current ceiling level created. Thanks for the suggestions, anyone know where to start with getting a new roof designed?
