Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.59 PM

I recently placed an offer on a house which considering fitting a new carpet for first floor including stairs. Master bedroom has carpets but there are two other rooms currently had old laminate floor. Do I need to take the laminate floor first when fitting the carpet? Thanks, Eva

Depending on the quality of the laminate. The laminate may of been a diy job and not fitted properly and could bow when carpet is stretched on top. If the laminate is durable enough the carpets can be layed straight on top. Wooden Doors can be cut if they need to be, but take into account that pvc ones cannot. Laying carpet on top if possible can save you quite abit of money, woods expensive to dispose of for tradesman. Hope this helps!

It's always best to remove the laminate flooring as laminate is generally a floating floor ie needs to move. If you fix grippers through the floor it will not move which may make it bow. Then the carpet may bubble up and wear.and then when you complain about carpet not wearing correctly your guarantee will be null and void as it has not been fitted on a suitable subfloor.

HI If the laminate is flat enough it can be left in place but remembering the gap under the bedroom door if its to tight then the flooring can be lifted or the door can be planed to suit

We would strongly recommend to remove the laminate first due to overtime laminate can move or bow, causing a problem with the new floor place on top

I would always recommend uplifting of laminate flooring as laminate can bow and if laminate wasn't fitted properly can sometimes bounce when walking on it

I would recommend to lift the laminate flooring. Due it to been a type floating floor it could possible move under the carpet. Although I have fitted before on laminate without any problems aslong as the laminate was fitted to a high standard and fixed in place. It really depends on the customers budget as removing the flooring could result in need new skirting boards and a new door.

Personally I would say take it up as laminate can be a floating floor and might lose your guarantee by fitting carpet straight on top, however it can be done, it’s all down to the quality of the laminate fitting, it’s totally up to the customer but if it was to cause you problems in the future that wouldn’t be down to the carpet fitter.

Ideally I would remove the laminate especially if you are wanting you carpets to round smoothly through the house and all at the same level for a crisp and clean finish if not remember to check the doors as they may need trimming when adding underlay and carpet. 👍🏼
