Restoration & Refurbishment

Re-wire and re-plumb before or during staged renovation

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I have bought a new house which needs renovation to bring it up to date. It is a cottage from c.1600 on one side and a 3 storey 1960’s extension on the other side. The plumbing (water and central heating) and wiring (including old consumer board and many live and redundant cables) have gone in ‘as and when’ and is certainly not laid out the way it would be if you were starting from scratch. I want to do the renovation in 3 or 4 stages. Starting by living in the older part (where the water and electrics first come into the house) while, the other side has a kitchen 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom put in. My question is: Would it be possible to renovate the different stages and connect the plumbing and electrics into the existing system; or is it more sensible to re-plumb and re-wire the whole house in one go? I expect that a categorical answer requires more information about what is currently there and what it needs to end up like; but for now I am interested in people’s first thoughts

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
