i have a six foot wide single glazed window and would like

I have a single glazed window That I would like to change and put a eight foot French door in would this be possible and of so would the opening meed reinforcing

Yes, possible. The opening would need a suitable and sufficient lintel(s) over to carry the weight of the loads above. This would need to be signed off by Local Authority Building Control or an Approved Inspector, because it does NOT fall under FENSA certification; due to the structural alterations. Anything is possible! Difficult to give a definitive answer without seeing the job, but in theory as long as there is sufficient brickwork left to support a new steel or catnic it's relatively straight forward. You should also notify your local Council building control dept. as they will need to inspect any new structural works (Possibly covered by a window company who are FENSA accredited .
