How easy is it to replace internal metal door frames, with 45mm thick doors?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM
My ex-council house has metal door frames and integral hinges. The doors are really in need of replacing and I am having difficulty sourcing 44mm doors that I like. I am soon to embark on a series of improvement projects and wonder if it is best at this stage to just replace. Is it a big job to remove the metal frames? I understand in doing so, a lintel will be needed. Has anyone got any words of wisdom please? Many thanks.

Any good carpenter could fit a door in a steel frame 44mm or 45mm thick. Normally internal doors are 35mm or similar yours are thicker it would seem. However your problem is the hinge sites, if the threads in the steel are in good order and you have the original hinges your okay. If not, that is a problem for you as new hinges will not match the original recesses and holes for the screws. I normally drill and tap the frame using 5mm machine screws. The latch strike plates are a bit of a pain as well but just need a little adjusting with a file. All of which pale into insignificance to replacing the frame or lining. If however you are completely overhauling the property it may be worth the expense.
