Is it possible to re-skim artexed ceilings?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

15 year old house - has swirly-patterned artex ceiling patterns throughout and coving applied.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

More often than not, these ceilings already have paint on them so recommend using a bonding agent first (not PVA) prior to plastering.......for example: Wickes PBA Thistle Bond-it Febond Blue-Grit or anything similar. These sealers have an added aggregate (unlike PVA) to improve adhesion & provide a 'key' for the plaster. They are coloured as well so easy to see where you have been. Quite easy to do yourself(will save you on plasterers prepping costs.) Just slap plenty on with a roller like you would with paint & just leave it to dry for at least a day, then hire a decent spread to crack on straight away with a double skim on it. Carl.

Hi,scrape back the rough part of the artex pattern...apply 2 coats of PVA to existing artex..plaster as normal with 2 coats..depends how good your plasterer is,re the coving....you will lose part of the lip of the coving..but around the edge of the coving, there should be what is known within the Artex tradesmen as a "finger" line, you shouldnt need so much plaster on this, thus saving the "lip" on your coving. Good Luck !!

It is possible but the ceiling will need scraping in order for it to be skimmed.

hi yes you can go straight over the artex with 2 good coats of multi finish but pva the ceilings first,if the artex is really thick then you will need to use bonding on first then go over with your 2 coat multi finish.jobs a gooden;)

Yes, you can plaster over artex, it needs to be sealed first, pva, if its a heavy pattern it might need bonding prior to 2 coats of multi finish.
